My Introduction to Data Science

It all started when I chose my undergraduate program. The concept of Business Technology Management seemed like the perfect combination of what I liked and where the world was heading; business + lots of tech.

It wasn’t until a course in my second year where I truly started to get a glimpse of what I signed up for. This class introduced me to an analytical software I had never heard about before; SQL. At the time, I started to learn python on my own through Codecademy and I felt that the code language formatting was sometimes similar to this software. I started to get the hang of SQL very quickly during the course and was amazed at its capabilities.

After finishing that course and continuing my data science career path on Codecademy, I realized data analytics really interested me. Ever since, I have planned my summer 2021 to gain as much technical skill and understanding with each language and software. That way, when an opportunity arises, I can not only contribute more, but also learn more advanced skills in my role.

During my second year of university, I was working at a well known tech company based in Ottawa in the support community. I had expressed my interests and goals with my lead at the time who was great friends with a senior developer in the company. After connecting the two of us, we have met every two weeks ever since and she has acted as my mentor as I learn code. I appreciate her gesture very much and I would not have grown as much as I have or have a greater understanding of code without her. She said that “as a female in tech, it is my duty to help other females in tech” and I can’t way to pay it forward when I am able to as well.

This will be the first of many blogs as I take you through my data science learning journey. Enjoy.
